(Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China Government Information Centre Website - Press Release 11-07-2004)

The Controller of the Centre for Health Protection, Dr Leung Pak-yin, July 11 led a delegation to Bangkok to attend the 15th International AIDS Conference jointly organised by the International AIDS Society and the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand.

The conference is the largest and most important global forum on AIDS. Medical professional and AIDS experts from all parts the world will make use of this occasion to exchange views and share their experiences on the prevention and control of AIDS.

The conference was held annually between 1985 and 1994 and has become a biennially event since 1994.

It will highlight the importance of the need for all groups of people, including scientists, community workers and leaders of different sectors to have access to all relevant resources developed since the detection of HIV/AIDS some 20 years ago, for achieving effective prevention, care and control.

The Hong Kong delegation will give several presentations including clinical research on AIDS, care of HIV/AIDS patients, and public education during the conference.

The conference secretariat and the TVE Asia Pacific will organise a parallel event, namely International AIDS Film Festival, during the six-day conference.

An educational film "Love Under the Sun", jointly produced by the Red Ribbon Centre, RTHK and the Ministry of Health, and a collection of AIDS promotional tapes produced by the Information Services Department will be presented during the film festival.

There are over 30 participants from Hong Kong, including Dr Homer Tso, Chairman of the Advisory Council on AIDS, and representatives from CHP, Hospital Authority and a number of community-based organisations.
