CSD is committed to putting in place policies and measures that will provide non-discriminatory and humane care of HIV infected inmates and create a safer environment to minimize the risk of transmission of HIV to persons in custody as well as staff.

CSD staff adopts standard precaution against all blood or bodily fluid borne diseases. Medical follow-up, treatment and counseling for persons in custody with asymptomatic or symptomatic HIV infection will be provided during detention.

Persons in custody are provided with information about HIV and the ways to prevent HIV transmission by means of health talk, education videos and posters. Also, pre-exit kits that contain pamphlets on AIDS prevention and condoms are distributed to persons in custody upon discharge.

Training on preventive measures against HIV, personal protective equipment and "Staff Information Booklet" will also be provided to staff in order to reduce the risk of contracting and transmitting HIV during work.

Information about the health status and medical treatment of HIV-infected persons in custody is confidential and will be recorded in files accessible only to the Medical Officer and staff on nursing duties on a need-to-know basis.
